I have a beef with many persons about Health

jesus

I have a problem with all those who say the devil makes us sick, God wants us to stay sick, etc.

The Devil wants you to suffer the most.. God temporarily allows it and it is not for everyone,

1 Peter 1=6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

The faith is an ongoing battle,.. against wicked persons, demons, sicknesses, false accusers, pits, etc., and God can help us to overcome all of it, and he does for me.

Revelation 12-9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Liberals, Democrats, John 8 -44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

1 Corinthians 10-21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

James 3-15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
James 4-7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

1 Peter 5-8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

1 John 3-8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

1 Timothy 4-1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Timothy 2=26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Mark 16 -17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils;

Acts 10-38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him

Revelation 20 -2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Some of the problems are our own stupidity.. such as cancer by eating processed meats, burnt food or diabetes by skipping meals, sugar excess , high cholesterol by eating fatty foods, and lack of exercise, being ignorant of what food is bad or good for us, plus over indulgence, sadly many persons are too lazy or fearful to go see a doctor when they need too as well. If you are over 45 years old you need to read all of this..

Sodium restriction

Salt and Potassium intakes on Heart health.

It is said that the evidence for sodium restriction is “vacuous, lacks depth, and in some cases lacks integrity.” Especially with respect to heart failure, there is a shockingly small amount of evidence. Sodium restrictions do help reduce water retention. Reducing one]s salt intake may reduce your chances of dying of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, or diabetes.

Do not be deceived! All Salt is salt and the they all all contain an equally high sodium chloride content The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality examined the effects of both sodium and potassium intake on health. It reported this year that lower sodium intake “most likely reduces” blood pressure. But it also reported that increasing potassium intake most likely has the same effect, because consuming more potassium causes you to excrete more sodium in your urine. (Of course, excess potassium has its own risks — any major dietary changes should be discussed with a physician.)

Other systematic reviews find that an increased intake of fibre is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. There were no data that showed that salt restriction reduced mortality or cardiac disease; affected whether someone was admitted to the hospital; or influenced how long they had to stay if admitted and there is a risk of emphasizing salt avoidance at the expense of other — potentially more useful — diet measures for what is best

It is important to note that we also lack a strong evidence base from randomized controlled trials where potassium and fibre are concerned.

We could advise people to exercise regularly (which has an enormous evidence base) and to eat more healthfully overall. Both the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet and the Mediterranean diet have been associated with lower rates of heart failure

If you have hyperkalemia, you have too much potassium in your blood. The body needs a delicate balance of potassium to help the heart and other muscles work properly. But too much potassium in your blood can lead to dangerous, and possibly deadly, changes in heart rhythm. In some people, potassium can cause stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or intestinal gas. Too much potassium is UNSAFE and can cause feelings of burning or tingling, generalized weakness, paralysis, mental confusion, low blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, or death.

It is true, though, that potassium can help lower blood pressure. The Pritikin Eating Plan, full of foods that are naturally rich in potassium like potatoes, beans, yogurt, and many fruits and vegetables (these foods are also very low in salt), has been documented to significantly lower blood pressure and reduce the need for hypertension medications

Yes scientists have found that for most people, monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is a safe salt substitute. The seasoning Accent, on supermarket shelves nationwide, contains MSG. There is no evidence that consuming MSG in moderation has any long-lasting negative impact on health or longevity.

 Potassium Citrate Side Effects
  • confusion, anxiety, feeling like you might pass out;

  • uneven heartbeat;

  • extreme thirst, increased urination;

  • leg discomfort;

  • muscle weakness or limp feeling;

  • numbness or tingly feeling in your hands or feet, or around your mouth;

  • severe stomach pain, ongoing diarrhea or vomiting;

  • black, bloody, or tarry stool

Limit high-potassium foods such as:

  • bananas. Avocados. Raisins. prunes and prune juice. oranges and orange Juice. tomatoes, tomato juice, and tomato sauce. Lentils. spinach.

Is no salt substitute safe?

Possibly, b ut Salt substitutes are not a healthful option for everyone.  Most, salt substitutes (including Morton Salt Substitute, NoSalt and Nu-Salt) consist of potassium chloride, which tastes somewhat like sodium chloride (table salt) but does not raise blood pressure. “Lite” or “low-sodium” salts (such as LoSalt andMorton Lite Salt) are blends of sodium chloride and potassium chloride. . Many persons with kidney problems are unable to rid their bodies of excessive potassium, which could result in a deadly situation.

Ingredients for a Salt Substitute Recipe

1 tablespoon dried basil. 1 tablespoon dried thyme.1 tablespoon ground coriander. 2 teaspoons onion powder. 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes.2 teaspoons ground cumin. 1 teaspoon garlic powder.1 teaspoon ground mustard. ALSO: cumin, cayenne, paprika, black pepper, oregano, lemon peel, rubbed sage.Rosemary. Nutmeg. Cardamon. Cinnamon. Chives.Dill. Mint Chives.

Teva-Spironolactone

Spironolactone belongs to the class of medications known as diuretics (water pills). It is used to treat edema (fluid retention) that occurs with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and nephrotic syndrome. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and to diagnose and treat primary hyperaldosteronism (a condition where too much aldosterone is produced by the adrenal glands). Spironolactone works by making the body lose excess water and salt but reduces the loss of potassium from the body.

What’s Causing Abdominal Pain and Diarrhea?

Abdominal pain and diarrhea that occurs at the same time can be caused by a variety of factors. These can include for a start

  • indigestion,
  • a viral infection such as the stomach flu,
  • or an intestinal disease. medication

Frequent, constant, or severe abdominal pain and diarrhea may indicate a disease or a more serious medical issue. Diarrhea that gets progressively worse and is bloody can be also be a sign of a more serious issue.

Possible causes of abdominal pain and diarrhea include:
• viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu)
• bacterial gastroenteritis (food poisoning)
• food allergies
• irritable bowel syndrome — a common disorder affecting the digestive system
• lactose intolerance — the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and some other dairy
product
• fecal impaction
• intestinal obstruction
• colitis
• appendicitis
• West Nile virus
• parasites (like giardiasis, amebiasis, or hookworm)
• bacterial infection (for example, shigellosis or E. coli)
• drug allergies
• celiac disease
• stress and anxiety
Other causes of abdominal pain and diarrhea
Infections or diseases that affect the organs in your abdomen can also cause pain with diarrhea. Organs
in the abdomen include your:
• intestines
• kidneys
• appendix
• spleen
• stomach
• gallbladder
• liver
• pancreas

Indigestion, the stomach flu, and food poisoning are now the most common causes of acute diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Drinking Coca-cola, or eating Apples, Applesauce, Cinnamon, Spearmint, peppermint, black tea, lemon balm, mint,

Apples are a very good supplement of dietary fiber that not only relieve stomach ache, but also keep the digestive system well maintained. In already suffering, the consumption of apple also prevents abdominal pain from aggravating.

Carbonated beverages not only help in getting rid of gas bubbles, but also eliminate stomach ache. Consuming caffeine-free or carbonated beverages, specifically cola, ginger ale and lemon-lime soda leads to burping that helps in driving out the gas from the stomach.

A burning sensation can happen due to a variety of conditions. And it doesn’t necessarily indicate a skin problem.

Treatments for Skin Burning Sensations

Dry brushing can significantly improve skin health.
1 It promotes circulation.
2 It exfoliates your skin.
3 Dry brushing activates the nervous system, which helps to improve muscle tone by stimulating muscle fibers. It also improves circulation, promoting the delivery of oxygen-rich blood to muscles to help with recovery and toning.
4 It improves kidney function.
5 It can reduce cellulite.

Using long sweeping motions, start brushing at your feet and move upwards. And always brush towards your heart to aid in circulation and follow the natural flow of lymph.

After you’ve brushed your whole body, it’s time for a shower. To get your blood flowing and really promote circulation, alternate the temperature between hot and cold. After showering, make sure you moisturize. Coconut oil is a great choice for clearing and hydrating your skin, especially after dry brushing. . Clean your brush every week with soap and water to keep it hygienic.

NOTE drinking  Cinnamon  is especially rich in chromium and one of the most recommended foods for diabetics due to its ability to lower blood sugar quickly. Other great foods for your blood sugar include:  beans ,  legumes  , vegetables like  broccoli   and  carrots , and  seaweed such as  kelp  and  spirulina

There are two components in  lemons that are definite benefits if you have  diabetes : soluble fiber and vitamin C. High-fiber diets have been shown to reduce blood sugar. Soluble fiber can also help lower heart disease risk by helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol and help with weight loss

Another study  found that taking apple cider vinegar before bed helped moderate blood sugar upon waking up.??

Too many persons push natural alternatives for all types of unproven yet cures

Research now suggests no benefit for daily use of aspirin in healthy, older people. Taking a low-dose aspirin daily has no benefit in warding off dementia, disability or cardiovascular disease in healthy, older adults, and may instead increase their risk of serious and potentially life-threatening bleeding, according to a study’s results, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, September 2018

“Taking a low-dose aspirin every day has long been known to cut the chances of another heart attack, stroke or other heart problem in people who already have had one, but the risks aren’t worth it for most folks, major new research finds

A tested aspirin study for people with diabetes, who are more likely to develop or die from heart problems, and found that the modest benefit it gave was offset by a greater risk of serious bleeding Aspirin did not help prevent cancer as had been hoped. And fish oil supplements, also tested in the study of people with diabetes, failed to help. Also a Boston-led study gave aspirin or dummy pills to 12,546 people who were thought to have a moderate risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke within a decade because of other health issues.

After five years, 4 per cent of each group had suffered a heart problem — far fewer than expected, suggesting these people were actually at low risk, not moderate. Other medicines they were taking to lower blood pressure and cholesterol may have cut their heart risk so much that aspirin had little chance of helping more, said the study leader, Dr. J. Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women’s Hospital. One per cent of aspirin takers had stomach or intestinal bleeding, mostly mild– twice as many as those on dummy pills. Aspirin users also had more nosebleeds, indigestion, reflux or belly pain

Doctors in Australia and the United States enrolled more than 19,000 healthy people – whites over the age of 70 and blacks and Hispanics aged 65 and older – in the study. None of the participants was known to suffer from heart disease, dementia or persistent physical disability at the time of enrollment.

Half of those enrolled took low-dose aspirin – 100 milligrams – daily, while the rest took a placebo each day for an average of 4.7 years.

The doctors found that taking a daily low-dose aspirin did not decrease the risk of heart attack or stroke among participants when compared with the placebo group. It also did not prolong “healthy independent living” – life free of dementia or persistent physical disability.

Do You Have Bad Kidneys

Your kidneys are bean-shaped organs that perform many important functions.
They’re in charge of filtering blood, removing waste through urine, producing hormones, balancing minerals and maintaining fluid balance.

There are many risk factors for kidney disease. The most common are uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. Alcoholism, heart disease, hepatitis C virus and HIV infection are also causes

When the kidneys become damaged and are unable to function properly, fluid can build up in the body and waste can accumulate in the blood. However, avoiding or limiting certain foods in your diet may help decrease the accumulation of waste products in the blood, improve kidney function and prevent further damage

The Connection Between Diet and Kidney Disease

A kidney-friendly diet, or a “renal diet,” usually includes limiting sodium and potassium to 2,000 mg per day and limiting phosphorus to 1,000 mg per day.

Here are foods that you should likely avoid on a renal diet.
1. Dark-Colored Colas
In addition to the calories and sugar that colas provide, they also contain additives that contain phosphorus, especially dark-colored colas.
2. Avocados
Avocados are often touted for their many nutritious qualities, including their heart-healthy fats, fiber and antioxidants.

Summary Avocados should be avoided on a renal diet due to their high potassium content. One cup of avocado provides nearly 37% of the 2,000 mg potassium restriction

4. Whole-Wheat Bread
Whole-wheat bread may be a more nutritious choice, mostly due to its higher fiber content. However, white bread is usually recommended over whole-wheat varieties for individuals with kidney disease. This is because of its phosphorus and potassium content. The more bran and whole grains in the bread, the higher the phosphorus and potassium contents.

5. Brown Rice
Like whole-wheat bread, brown rice is a whole grain that has a higher potassium and phosphorus content than its white rice counterpart.. White rice, bulgur, buckwheat and couscous are all good alternatives.

6. Bananas
Bananas are known for their high potassium content.

7. Dairy
Dairy products a natural source of phosphorus and potassium
However, when the kidneys are damaged, too much phosphorus consumption can cause a buildup of phosphorus in the blood. This can make your bones thin and weak over time and increase the risk of bone breakage or fracture Dairy alternatives .

8. Oranges and Orange Juice
Oranges and orange juice are high in potassium and should be limited on a renal diet. Try grapes, apples, cranberries or their juices instead.

9. Processed Meats
Processed meats have long been associated with chronic diseases and are generally considered unhealthy due to their content of preservatives and lack of nutrients Processed meats are meats that have been salted, dried, cured or canned. Some examples include hot dogs, bacon, pepperoni, jerky and sausage. Processed meats are high in salt and protein and should be consumed in moderation on a renal diet.

10. Pickles, and Relish
Pickles, processed olives and relish are all examples of cured or pickled foods. Usually, large amounts of salt are added during the curing or pickling process. However, even reduced-sodium options can still be high in sodium, so you will still want to watch your portions.

11. Apricots
Apricots are rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and fiber.
They are also high in potassium. It’s best to avoid apricots, and most importantly dried apricots, on a renal diet.

12. Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
Potatoes and sweet potatoes are potassium-rich vegetables.
Just one medium-sized baked potato (156 g) contains 610 mg of potassium, whereas one average-sized baked sweet potato (114 g) contains 541 mg of potassium

Potatoes that are soaked in a large pot of water for at least four hours before cooking are proven to have an even lower potassium content than those not soaked before cooking potatoes and sweet potatoes are high-potassium vegetables. Boiling or double cooking potatoes can decrease potassium by about 50%.

13. Tomatoes
Tomatoes are another high-potassium fruit that may not fit the guidelines of a renal diet.. However, swapping tomato sauce for a roasted red pepper sauce can be equally delicious, all while providing less potassium per serving.

14. Packaged, Instant and Pre-Made Meals
Processed foods can be a major component of sodium in the diet. Examples include frozen pizza, microwaveable meals and instant noodles.

15. Swiss Chard, Spinach and Beet Greens
Swiss chard, spinach and beet greens are leafy green vegetables that contain high amounts of various
nutrients and minerals, including potassium. Although serving size becomes smaller when cooked, potassium content remains the same.

16. Dates, Raisins and Prunes
Nutrients are concentrated when fruits are dried. Therefore, the potassium content of dried fruit, including dates, prunes and raisins, is extremely high and should be avoided on a renal diet.

17. Pretzels, Chips and Crackers
Ready-to-eat snack foods like pretzels, chips and crackers tend to be lacking in nutrients and relatively high in salt.
If you have kidney disease, reducing your potassium, phosphorus and sodium intake can be an important aspect of managing the disease.
The high-sodium, high-potassium and high-phosphorus foods listed above are likely best limited or avoided.

Studies reveal role of red meat in gut bacteria, heart disease development

December 10, 2018, Cleveland Clinic Stan Hazen, MD, PhD, of Cleveland Clinic Credit: Cleveland Clinic

In concurrent studies, Cleveland Clinic researchers have uncovered new mechanisms that demonstrate why and how regularly eating red meat can increase the risk of heart disease, and the role gut bacteria play in that process.

One of our most surprising findings was that a diet rich in red meat actually changed kidney function. We saw that the kidneys were being regulated by a chronic diet. This is something that, as far as I am aware, hasn’t been shown before,” Hazen told NBC News.

The research, led by Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., builds upon previous work showing TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) – a gut bacteria byproduct formed during digestion—can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. TMAO is produced when gut bacteria digest choline, lecithin and carnitine, nutrients that are abundant in animal products such as red meat and liver and other animal products.

In a new dietary intervention study published today in the European Heart Journal, the researchers found that a diet rich in red meat as the primary protein source significantly increases circulating TMAO levels, compared to diets with white meat or non-meat as protein sources. The study showed chronic red meat consumption enhanced the production of TMAO by gut microbes and reduced the kidneys’ efficiency of expelling it. Both enhanced production and reduced elimination caused by a red meat diet contribute to elevation in TMAO levels, which has been linked to the development of atherosclerosis and heart disease complications.

High levels of TMAO in the blood have been shown to be a powerful tool for predicting future heart attack, stroke and death risks, according to previous research initially spearheaded by Dr. Hazen and his team, and subsequently replicated around the world. TMAO testing is now in clinical use as a result. Dr. Hazen chairs the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine in Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute and is co-section head of Preventive Cardiology & Cardiac Rehabilitation in the Miller Heart &Vascular Institute.

The study included 113 participants who sequentially (in random order) were provided complete meal plans prepared using either red meat, white meat or non-meat (mostly vegetarian) protein sources as 25 percent of their daily calories. All participants had a wash-out diet in between meal plans.

After one month of the red meat diet, the vast majority of study participants experienced an elevation in TMAO levels in blood and urine. On average, TMAO levels in the blood increased approximately 3-fold during the red meat diet, compared to the white meat or non-meat diets, with some patients showing over a 10-fold rise. Similar increases were observed in the urine. However, after patients stopped the red meat diet, TMAO levels in the blood and urine subsided over the following month.

The study also revealed the unanticipated finding that a participant’s chronic dietary choices impacted kidney function by changing the effectiveness of the kidneys to expel compounds. For example, while a red meat diet decreased TMAO excretion, the red meat diet increased the excretion efficiency of carnitine and other carnitine-derived metabolites.

“This is the first study of our knowledge to show that the kidneys can change how effectively they expel different compounds depending on the diet that one eats—other than salts and water,” said Dr. Hazen, who also directs Cleveland Clinic Center for Microbiome and Human Health. “We know lifestyle factors are critical for cardiovascular health, and these findings build upon our previous research on TMAO’s link with heart disease. They provide further evidence for how dietary interventions may be an effective treatment strategy to reduce TMAO levels and lower subsequent risk of heart disease.”

In another study, published today in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Dr. Hazen and his research team revealed a potential new target for preventing cardiovascular disease by drilling deeper into a gut microbial pathway that converts carnitine into TMAO.

The researchers found that carnitine—a nutrient abundant in red meat and some energy drinks and supplements—is converted to TMAO in the gut through a two-step process facilitated by distinct gut bacteria. The team discovered that the first step is similar in both omnivores (meat eaters) and vegans/vegetarians. But in the second part, the formation of TMAO is significantly enhanced in omnivores. Researchers then went on to show that a daily carnitine supplement can induce TMAO production, even for vegans and vegetarians who continue eating their normal diets. Earlier this year, Dr. Hazen and his team published a study showing how researchers had designed a potential new class of drugs for prevention of heart disease and clotting risk by interrupting the microbial pathway by which choline is converted into TMAO.

Dr. Hazen’s team compared the impact of daily oral carnitine supplements on omnivores versus vegetarians/vegans. At baseline, vegan/vegetarians showed limited ability to produce TMAO from carnitine while omnivores rapidly produced TMAO. After one month of supplementation, both groups showed an increased capacity to produce TMAO.

“By uncovering this new pathway, we can potentially develop new treatments to interrupt this process before both the development and progression of cardiovascular disease.”

Journal reference: European Heart Journal Journal of Clinical Investigation

An October article in the journal Nutrients reviewed the research in recent years on TMAO, saying “there is convincing evidence suggesting an association between TMAO and inflammation. Furthermore, in the last decade the studies suggesting an association between high plasma TMAO levels and risk for developing atherosclerosis have increased markedly. And eating a lot of red and processed meat probably increases your risk of bowel cancer.

Regular consumption of red meat can raise levels of a cardiovascular disease causing the =chemical organic compound – known as TMAO (trimethylamine N-oxide) – is produced in the gut during digestion. more than 10 times, suggests the study. It’s high levels have been associated with increasing the risk of strokes, heart attacks and premature death.

Use Pressed Garlic to Reverse Vision Loss

Mode of consumption

  • To obtain these benefits from daily garlic consumption, one or two cloves is recommended.
  • You should always eat it raw, because when you cook garlic it loses up to 90% of its benefits.
  • You can also combine it with a little lemon juice and olive oil.

How often should you add this to your diet? Now that you know how good it can be for your vision, stop making excuses and try it on a regular basis.

You’ll need a kitchen utensil known as a garlic press, which is designed to crush a clove of garlic by pressing it through a series of small holes. It has a small lever that serves to press the clove into a thick paste.

A healthy diet, regular physical activity, drinking enough water, reducing stress and getting enough sleep are all beneficial for regulating blood pressure, normalizing blood sugar levels to prevent nerve damage and supporting heart health.

The Indian spice that could save your eyesight,  that reverses and prevents age-related vision loss is saffron

To stop age-related vision loss and make your eyes as healthy as possible, you need to get at least 20 mg per day of saffron. There are two options for using this powerful orange miracle. You can cook with it and if you love curries, this is a great choice.  Or, you can take a saffron extract supplement. They are widely available and easy to find.Since saffron is a very expensive spice, for most people, taking the supplement will be the best option. after a year or more ingesting only 20 mg (milligrams) of saffron daily, vision improvements should stabilize without requiring more saffron dosing. Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice, stemming from the dried orange-red stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower. Boil a pinch in tea for a delicious refreshing hot drink, add to smoothies and all other recipes I’d suggest you visit an East Indian store. Bought the Spanish saffron this week. It is around $7 something for 2g. Remember, the redder in colour the higher the quality.    The crop with tiny leaves and purple buds does not flaunt its treasure. But hidden at the centre of the flowers are pistils, each containing three red stigmas which, when dried, make the pricey seasoning saffron.

Avoid eating margarine.

Sunflower seeds=Selenium which is found abundantly in sunflower seeds is known to prevent cataracts and also protect overall eye health. Eat a handful of sunflower seeds every day.

Essential oils: Frankincense essential oil has been demonstrated to improve eyesight, helichrysum oil improves vision and supports nerve tissue, and cypress essential oil improves circulation. Apply three drops of any of these essential oils twice daily on the cheeks and lateral eye area (next to the eyes), but be very careful not to put oils directly into the eyes.

Coconut oil – Coconut oil may prevent progression of wet and dry macular degeneration. Take a couple of tablespoons of the oil daily in your diet. You can also use it to massage gently around the eyes.

Foods to improve blood circulation in the body

health

There are also a number of brilliant herbs which have been shown to have a great effect at improving circulation. The four main herbs which have been proven to have a positive effect include cayenne, garlic, ginkgo biloba and ginger.

Some of the simple dietary changes that you can make include adding more fibre to your diet. Try eating more fruit and vegetables each day. Another thing you can do is to drink more fresh water at least 5 or 6 glasses.

Exercise for a myriad of benefits, including weight loss and better circulation. Just like the muscles in your body, your cardiovascular system needs to be exercised to stay strong. When you exercise with your legs, such as walking or using a leg machine, blood pumps to the ankles, calves and feet to help support the movement of the muscles used. This in turn helps to improve circulation and improve your weight, which acts as a marker for poor circulation issues.

Citrus fruits contain high amounts of vitamin C that helps strengthen capillary walls and also acts as a natural blood thinner, promoting smooth circulation. Goji berries, which look like raisins, are known for improving blood circulation due to their high fiber content. Watermelon is rich in lycopene, which has been linked to improved circulation

Dark chocolate. This type of chocolate contains a high amount of cocoa, which is known for improving blood flow. Studies have shown that dark chocolate can improve blood flow in the legs by affecting chemicals in the body that help widen arteries.

Dry skin brushing This involves vigorously brushing the skin with a dry brush. The removal of dead skin cells is thought to help improve blood circulation. The act of brushing will stimulate your skin promoting blood flow to it, as well as promote the elimination of metabolic waste

Walnuts and raw almonds have been found to help improve blood flow. Several types of nuts are high in vitamin A, B, C, and E, as well as magnesium and iron. Each of these nutrients helps contribute to better blood circulation.

Turmeric is a wonderful spice that can help improve blood circulation. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, helps prevent blood platelets from forming clots and reduces plaque buildup in the arteries. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and a little honey to a glass of warm milk. Drink it 1 or 2 times daily. Also, include turmeric in your cooking.

Coconut oil is very beneficial for improving blood circulation. It has healthy fats and contains medium-chain triglycerides that help relieve inflammation of the arteries. This in turn improves blood flow throughout the body. Consume 2 to 3 tablespoons of extra-virgin coconut oil daily. You can also use warm coconut oil to massage your hands and legs daily

Onion is also one of the best foods to improve blood circulation in the body. It contains high concentrations of allicin, a substance that is known to improve blood circulation. It also functions as a diuretic, increasing the amounts of fluids to be excreted. This helps to reduce swelling caused due to poor circulation.

Rosemary is one of the great herbal remedies for blood circulation improvement in the body. Fresh rosemary works best, but you can use the dried ones as well.

Garlic promotes blood circulation, lowers blood pressure and prevents blood platelet aggregation. It is effective in preventing plaque buildup in the arteries and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2006 found that garlic is good for cardiovascular health.Eat 2 to 3 raw garlic cloves daily on an empty stomach, include garlic in your daily cooking

Warm, dry footwear is a must for helping to maintain one’s body temperature.

If you can use stairs instead of a lift at least part of the way, then do so. If you can avoid using a lift, then do so. Stairs really work the legs, raise temperature and get things moving internally.

Folic acid deficiency results in a form of anaemia that responds quickly to folic acid supplementation. Anaemia is a condition when the amount of red blood cells is below normal, accompanied by a tired feeling due to lack of oxygen. There are various factors that cause this including iron deficiency, poor diet and disease. ‘Anaemia’ is a word that literally means “without iron” from the Greek word ‘anaimia’ – which means lack of blood.

B vitamin is essential for reducing levels of damaging amino acid homocysteine. B6 can be found in fish, pulses, nuts, chicken and potatoes.

Lycopene This is a carotenoid noted for its use in reducing the risk of coronary disease. It is fat-soluble and is therefore more efficiently absorbed when eaten with oil. It can be found in raw tomatoes and in any tomato product.

Gel toe separators are handy little inserts that you can secure between your toes.  The compression and gel contour stretch and promote blood flow to your toes.

The Doctors cannot do everything for you , you also do have to do your part to improve, maintain your health.

Natural cures for itchy skin?

h

Itchy skin is a common problem for seniors and doctors rarely help to deal with it.

There are many possible causes, but for some people no obvious cause can be found. Generalised especially in people over 65 years of age itchyness is most commonly caused by dry skin. It may also be caused by medicines or by internal diseases affecting the body. Reduce stress, as stress can make your itch worse. Diabetes can cause it as well

Avoid scratching whenever possible.

Itching, known medically as pruritus, is an uncontrollable and irritating sensation on the skin that urges you to scratch the affected area to get relief. It is also one of your body’s defense mechanisms against irritants. Aloe vera gel will provide immediate relief from itching, that is why it is considered to be one of the most effective home remedies for itchy skin. However, continue to apply it 3 times daily for 4 to 5 days to get complete relief from itchy skin.

Aloe Vera

Break off a leaf from the plant, and cut it open lengthwise from top to bottom with a knife. Scoop out the gooey gel inside, and rub it directly onto irritated skin. If you have extra left over, you can keep it refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week.

Aloe veras has  an enzyme called bradykinase found in aloe vera gel helps reduce excessive inflammation when applied topically on the skin. It also contains auxins and gibberellins, which are hormones that aid wound healing. Its fatty acid content adds to its antiseptic and analgesic properties; it can also be used to treat minor burns. It can be used most successfully to get rid of acne and scars, to stop skin itchiness, to make  a homemade face wash, and also to lighten skin.

Making aloe vera gel at home is super easy, very inexpensive.  First wash your hands Always wash your hands before extracting aloe vera gel, as any impurities can contaminate and spoil the gel quickly. Then leave the leaves in upright position for a few minutes to let the darker resin drain out. After the resin has drained, wash the leaves and start peeling off the thick skin with a knife, leaving you with the transparent gel.

Wash a healthy aloe vera leaf under running water.

Using a knife, cut the serrated edges off the leaf. If the leaf is too long, you can cut it into 8-inch pieces for easy handling.

Make a long, lengthwise incision in the middle of the leaf to peel off the skin.

Place your knife right under the rind and slide it along the length of the leaf to pull off the skin. Try to stay close to the skin so you get as much gel as you can.

Repeat the same for the other half of the skin.

If you like your aloe vera gel thick and gooey, skip the blender part. Simply scrape out the aloe vera pulp and use it
Place the gel into a blender and also add a few drops of either grapefruit seed extract, vitamin C powder, vitamin E oil or some essential oil to help preserve the gel for longer period.  Then blend everything, pour into a clean glass jar and you’ve got some fresh aloe vera gel which can be kept for several months in the refrigerator.  Fresh aloe vera gel without any added preservatives will stay good for 1 week when kept refrigerated at all times.

What you can also do?

After you extract the gel from the aloe vera leaf, wash it to remove the yellow liquid that sometimes is also removed.

Mix the gel with an equal amount of honey. Thanks to its high content of natural sugars, honey is a product that never expires. The low concentration of water is another key to its long shelf life, just like fruit preserves or fruit stored in syrup

Use this for making smoothies, teas, and facial masks, and more.

Other alternatives

Vicks VapoRub  relieves itchy skin by providing a cooling affect due to the presence of menthol and eucalyptus oil;   Moreover, Vicks also has antifungal properties that may help kill any microbe causing the itching.

Calamine Lotion  can also be used to treat itchy skin resulting from skin conditions, bed bug bites, stretch marks, sunburns or any viral infection. The lotion leaves a cooling effect on the skin, thus soothing irritated and itchy skin

Baking Soda Bath.

Baking soda also works as a disinfectant, in case the skin irritation is caused by some type of microbe or a bug bite, making it one of the most effective home remedies for itchy skin. Make a paste and apply it to the skin. Or

Soaking in a bath of baking soda for 30-60 minutes can make all the difference. …Add one cup baking soda to a tub of warm water. After the bath, it is important to gently pat your skin dry with a towel (or air-dry). For more localized itching you can make a paste of 1 part water to 3 parts baking soda

Apple Cider Vinegar.

Apple cider vinegar is an effective antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent that relieves itching, especially itching associated with dry skin (for example: sunburns and dandruff). Or Mix 2 tablespoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, adding honey, cinamon as well. Add two or three cups of vinegar to your bath water and soak for 15 to 30 minutes. Apple Cider Vinegar  works as an antiseptic and helps kill the invading pathogen as well as neutralizing the skin’s acidity to alleviate itching.

Coconut Oil.

Besides removing the dryness and roughness of skin which makes itching worse, coconut oil has a soothing action on itching itself. In fact, coconut oil is often used to relieve itching due to insect bites and nettle stings. To be sure your oil is as pure as it can be, make sure to opt for an Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil that is either  cold-pressed and unrefined, or pressed. Coconut oil is a cheap and effective natural treatment for many skin conditions including eczema. It can also be used on the skin for everyday moisture, as a lip balm, makeup remover and so much more. Coconut oil is extremely gentle on the skin and can be used by people of all ages and all skin types.

If your skin’s seriously dry, coconut oil for skin is one of the best remedies. Rub coconut oil in hands to warm it up and then use it in lieu of body lotion. Because coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, antifungal, moisturizing and, according to research, great for atopic dermatitis, many women swear by its use as a nighttime moisturizer for their face, too. The best way to use it is to rub a little coconut oil directly onto the affected area. If you suffer from a widespread itch all over the body especially during the winter, soak in a bathtub of lukewarm water; then just pat yourself dry and apply the oil all over.

Using it as a topical therapy significantly improves skin hydration as well as skin surface lipid levels. Coconut oil also is able to penetrate your skin on a deeper level than your average product because of its low molecular weight and the way it bonds with proteins. Create a simple detox bath with coconut oil by adding ¼ cup of Epsom salts, great for detoxing, to ¼ cup of coconut oil into a hot bath. “Coconut oil is as effective and safe as mineral oil when used as a moisturizer.”

Stretch marks occur as the skin’s elasticity changes, most frequently after weight gain/loss or pregnancy. Using coconut oil can help reduce the marks that are left behind, helping them fade more quickly while keeping skin moisturized to allow quicker healing. We should warn that some people might have an allergic reaction to the coconut oil itself. Although this appears to be a rare reaction,

Cold water

Apply a cold, wet cloth or ice pack to the skin that itches. A cool, wet compresses to soothe the itch. Do this for about five to 10 minutes or until the itch subsides.
Because cold and itch travel along the same nerve fibers, the use of cold can “jam the circuits” and deaden itch. Cool showers or baths or even ice packs can be an instant remedy for itchy skin. Again, hot water feels good temporarily, but it often leaves you feeling itchier later.

Peppermint Leaves

Peppermint is great for bug bites and itching, as it provides a cooling sensation that’ll give you welcome relief. The quickest, easiest way is to crush up the leaves and rub the peppermint directly onto the skin. You could even freeze the crushed peppermint leaves into ice cubes for a cooling double-whammy, as the cold of the ice cubes also helps to numb the affected area and bring down swelling and inflammation. Always use clean, filtered water.

Lemon

With a rich content of vitamin C and bleaching properties, lemons are one of the best remedies for itchy skin. The volatile oil in lemon has the ability to numb sensations and is also good against inflammation. Simply cut a lemon in two and squeeze out a little juice over the itchy area; allow to air dry and you’ll soon find some relief.

You can use tea tree essential oil to get rid of itchy skin. The homemade aloe vera paste for dry scalp. Lemon juice has powerful doses of citric acid that breaks down the yeast buildup on the scalp. Coconut oil has both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties in just the right proportion, which help to stimulate blood flow, reduce scalp infection and free up hair follicles Ingredients 1 tablespoon fresh aloe vera gel 1 tablespoon coconut oil 10 drops of tea tree oil, 1/2  tablespoon lemon juice

Garlic is packed with zinc and copper which stimulate blood circulation, cleanse scalp of the buildup residue and help remove flaky dandruff. Crush a few garlic cloves and extract the juice. Mix 1 tablespoon of garlic juice with half a cup of coconut oil. Heat it in low flame. Massage the oil on to your scalp. Massage until you feel your scalp becoming warm. Let it sit for an hour or so. Rinse your hair with clarifying shampoo and condition. Homemade Dandruff Treatments & Shampoos

hair wash

Not washing one’s hair is certainly a time-saver. Imagine this,  but not five days  with no shampoo or conditioner. Dream on..

Dandruff may be also caused by not rinsing well your hair well after a soap wash and  thus using additionally a conditioner can help.

.

If you know you have dandruff, than read on.

Below are home remedies to help you

.

1. Pour, Rinse, With Vinegar

Rinsing your hair with vinegar (specifically Apple Cider Vinegar or white vinegar) actually addresses the root of the problem Put simply, dandruff is the result of skins cells maturing and dying too fast, building up, and causing irritation. Vinegar will get rid of the unwanted skin that would flake off into dandruff, and it won’t clog up your pores or cause more. An overgrowth of fungus can also cause dandruff, and vinegar acts like a fungicide. Using it is straightforward, simple, and is probably easier on your hair than some shampoos out there.

.

You will need…
-1/2 cup warm water
-1/2 cup ACV or white vinegar
-A cup

Directions
Mix together the warm water and vinegar in a cup. The total amount may be varied to be more or less depending on how much hair you have. Pour the mixture over your hair, scrub it around gently for several minutes, and then rinse it thoroughly with water (only water!) Wait about 8-12 hours before taking a normal shower. Repeat once every week or two weeks, depending on how often you feel you need it.

.

2.  Baking Soda

Baking soda is just an all-around useful thing to have in the house. It plays a large part in a lot of natural home remedies, and for good reason-it usually works! It helps to remove dandruff for a number of reasons. First, it mildly exfoliates, which gets rid of the excess dead skin. It’s also kills off acts as a fungicide, and a common fungus that occurs on everyone’s scalp can cause dandruff if it becomes overly abundant. In addition, its tiny particles can be useful in actually removing those loose flakes stuck in your hair-instead of just breaking the pieces of skin up into smaller pieces.

You will need…
-1 tablespoon of baking soda
-1 cup of water
-A few drops of rosemary oil (optional)

Directions
Mix one tablespoon of baking soda to every one cup of warm water. If you’re using an old (clean) shampoo or soap bottle, shake up the mixture and apply generously. Otherwise, stir it before you use it. Do this in place of shampoo, daily if possible. Your hair may feel quite dry in the beginning, but its natural oils will restore themselves soon, and they will be much more balanced than when using some commercial shampoo. If you feel you absolutely must use shampoo (and really try the baking soda alone first if you can) you can add a teaspoon of baking to a handful of shampoo and use that instead. The rosemary oil is optional, but some people find rosemary helps dandruff and think it has a pleasant scent.

.

3.You can  Utilize Listerine

Listerine was actually created in 1879 by a doctor in Missouri and used as a powerful surgical antiseptic for dentists. one its original purposes was also to fight dandruff. Listerine fights fungus, and one of the most common cause of dandruff is an overabundance of fungus.

You will need…
-Water
-Listerine Mouthwash (preferably not green or blue as they might stain your hair)
-Spray bottle (optional)

Directions…
Mix 2 parts water with 1 part Listerine. After you shampoo, spray or pour the solution onto your scalp, massage in well, and let sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with water.

.

4. Get Some Sun on your scalp

It’s not known exactly why, but there have been links between dandruff and exposure to sunlight. There have been many cases in which the severity of dandruff lessened when the afflicted person spent more time in the sun.

,

5.  Aspirin

Aspirin can help with more than just headaches-it’s also an easy at-home remedy for dandruff. Pure Aspirin uses a large percentage of Salicylic Acid, which is an active ingredient in many commercial anti-dandruff shampoos. Salicylic Acid has fungicidal and anti-microbial properties to fight the extra flakes caused by fungus, while the Aspirin helps with the inflamed skin that often goes hand-in-hand with severe cases of dandruff.

You will need…
-2 white Aspirin tablets
-Shampoo

Directions…
Crush up the Aspirin until it becomes a fine powder. Add it to your regular shampoo before use, making sure to leave it in your hair for about 2 minutes before rinsing completely.

Lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol or an unhealthy diet are linked to nearly half of Britain’s cancer cases,

AS A SENIOR I HAVE DEFINATELY NOTICED THAT MOST PEOPLE CARE TO READ UP ON HEALTH CARE ONLY WHEN THEY ARE REALLY SICK.. AND NOT BEFORE… NOW THAT IS REALLY SAD.   https://stayinhealth.wordpress.com/2008/11/21/anti-suicide-watch/

.

Lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol or an unhealthy diet are linked to nearly half of Britain’s cancer cases, a study claimed recently.

These “preventable” cancers account for 45 percent of all cancers in men and 40 percent of cancers in women, according to Cancer Research UK — more than 100,000 cases a year. The authors claim the study is the most comprehensive ever written on the subject. Many people believe cancer is down to fate or ?in the genes? and that it is the luck of the draw whether they get it,”   Looking at all the evidence, it’s clear that around 40 percent of all cancers are caused by things we mostly have the power to change.”

Smoking is by far the habit that increases cancer risk the most, causing 23 percent of all cancers in men and 15.6 percent of cases in women — 60,800 cases a year in total, according to the study. For men, lack of fruit and vegetables — linked to 6.1 percent of cases — was the second most important factor, followed by work conditions such as whether they were exposed to asbestos (4.9 percent of cancers). For women, the second biggest factor was obesity, linked to 6.9 percent of cases. “We didn’t expect to find that eating fruit and vegetables would prove to be so important in protecting men against cancer,”   “And among women we didn’t expect being overweight to have a greater effect than alcohol.” Alcohol was blamed by the study for 3.3 percent of female cancers — fewer cases than those blamed on sunbeds (3.6 percent). Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive said. “But this study shows that healthy habits can significantly stack the odds in our favour.”

FALSELY IN DENIAL

We’re in denial about heart health factors  Brantford Expositor – A report from the Heart and Stroke Foundation says that Canadians are in denial about their risk factors for heart disease, including being overweight and physically inactive.

Changes in the way people eat and exercise and

WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT THE CITIZEN’S GOOD WELFARE?

Thousands of cancer cases caused by diet, alcohol and obesity …   Over 40% of breast and bowel cancer cases in rich countries are preventable through diet, physical activity and weight control alone, experts say. Simple measures like cycling to work and swapping fatty foods for fruit can make all the difference, a Clean living way to beat cancer.   1 in 3 Common Cancers May Be Preventable.  Diet, exercise could cut cancer rates by third .Diet is key to staying cancer free

Shun fats, smokes, get out and about for a healthy heart OTTAWA – Changes in the way people eat and exercise and improvements to health care could sharply reduce the death toll from heart attacks and strokes and save billions of dollars, a federal panel said Tuesday. and what is so new about all of that for  I myself have been posting that facts, details truths  on the net for years.. and so I still do  often   wonder why the people in the governments, federal, provincial governments, now  take so long to respond, deal with it positively too..  or they really do not care about the good welfare of the sheep.. all Canadians? they are merely self serving, selfish oriented?

Some of the world’s leading experts in nutrition epidemiology have cast a resounding vote in the decades-long debate between treating or preventing cancer: Prevention wins.  Their report, being released today, argues strenuously for diet and exercise as the keys to fighting cancer. It calls research and spending on the treatment of cancer “necessary but not sufficient,” and contends that a far better strategy for reducing the world’s annual tally of 11 million cancer cases would be to develop a public-health policy aimed at preventing people from getting the disease in the first place. The report, issued by the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research, is based on an exhaustive review of nearly 7,000 scientific studies into whether cancer rates are influenced by diet, obesity and exercise.

How many times have we now experienced he fact that the selected leaders, cabinet was not like what they had promised they would be, certainly now not like we had expected them rightfully to be as well? Clearly many many  Canadians are still often now really angry at, or disappointed with   the results of the various governments acts,    the selected candidates,  but  now when will we all deal with the root  issue that is the cause of the problems firstly and it is the immoral type of candidates being firstly nominated?  the liars and alcoholics mostly it seems.. and these type of brain damaged people will never do us much good even now as well.

We all need to care about the unemployed and the poor people, Elected officials now included. It also  seems even  the governments and it’s managers are too often rather still just for sale to the highest bidder… and it doesn’t care who they are involved with or what they are up to or what it looks like as long as they are rewarding themselves or  their friends, and thus they wrongfully and too tend  not too  really look after all of the good ordinary citizens welfare..  this is still never acceptable. They all Civil and public servants, politicians, need to be regularly supervised too. That is why we need and have the auditors, News media, Opposition parties, concerned citizens to do this too.. and it still generally is not enough as we can see.
Can you believe it that the already rich doctors as well complain they are underpaid, demand more money, and yet these very same doctors only  work 9 to 5, have the holidays and weekend off, even though people get sick all the time now too..
THE DOCTORS AND NURSES NEED TO GET BACK TO CARING AFTER THE SICK PEOPLE.

Many weight loss products like pills, herbs and some private clinics fail to deliver on their promises and governments should be regulating scientifically unproven therapies, obesity doctors say.  I said the same thing in writing to the federal government, health ministers the last 2 decades too.

In addition to a doctor the second best thing I discovered was a dietician..

Now on top of all that add to that how food manufacturers, drug stores do also make big  profits on health related items

There is always the obligations to spend the taxpayer’s money  money wisely, free from politics and free from personal agendas. That now still applies to   anybody that   takes part in any amount of this funding.  On this there is no compromise or  shortcuts. Full, real, active  Vigilance by all persons here is still always required in reality. There are still too few cost, money controls — and too many opportunities for fraud and abuse — associated with the biggest outlay of federal money in our own government’s history.

TWO OF MY PAST NEIGHBORS, MANAGERS,  WHO WORKED FOR CITY HALL OPENLY BOASTED TO ME, AND DEMONSTRATED TO ME FOR YEARS THE COMMON CORRUPTION IN THE LOCAL CITY HALL, DONE BY THEM AND MANY OF THEIR COLLEAGUES. This included their unnecessary out of town trips, their taking stuff, computer accessories,  home from the office for their own personal use, boasted of  their lavish expense accounts, of their doing personal work at the office, and much more. Why did they think that me a tax payer would approve any of such wrong doings was their error. I reported their wrong doings rightfully rather. OTHER MANAGERS OF CROWN CORORATIONS HAD ALSO OFTEN BOASTED TO ME OF THEM DOING SIMILAR THEFTS  AS WELL..

Now we had elected the new Conservatives , a new government and a leader that was supposed to be much better, different from all the so called past bad governments. A government that would be reliable, , it will be open, transparent, accountable, better managed, honest, and it would keep it’s pre-election  promises,  would not lie to us too, And next was that so in reality? NO!!! Unacceptable

Do first  stop electing, hiring  liars, alcoholics, incompetents, and pretenders mostly.. instead fire all of them

actions speak louder than mere words, http://thenonconformer.wordpress.com/

Now we all know that prices can vary, even significantly from one  retail store to another, and that price fixings also do exist something the consumer affairs ministers need to supervise with more vigilance than they tend to do so as well now..  DO FORWARD THEM THIS NOTE, REMINDER NOW TOO.

Still Shopping in one sole store is a dangerous way to try to save on essential good and health costs, but what do you do when there is not much choice, you are at the mercy of the seller, distributor, who often wrongfully do not hesitate to take advantage of it and to price gouge you. Simple old fashion greed is the basis of the high prices everywhere it seems. Take  for instance 1 in 8 persons is diabetic, but yet   the price of sugar free products is often 300 percent higher or even much more for a start.. the same applies to Margarine, etc

NOTE  THE fresh, healthy food IS EXPENSIVE FIRSTLY CAUSE THE RETAILERS HAVE A HIGH PRICE MARK UP ON IT. NOW THAT INCLUDES NOT ONLY FRUITS, AND VEGETABLES but other supposedly more healthier products.. YES THE SHIPPING COSTS FROM CALIFORNIA HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT, BUT CALIFORNIA IS IN DRASTIC RECESSION SO YOU WOULD THINK THE PRICES THERE OF THEIR GOODS WOULD BE CHEAPER NOW AS WELL? The old excuse of the price of high rising cost of fuel is no longer valid as well.

Based on this review, it concludes that cancer “is mostly preventable,” estimating that about one-third of all cases in advanced countries like Canada could be eliminated by diets that aren’t loaded with fatty, sugary foods, by people exercising regularly and, if they are obese, by slimming down to an appropriate weight. Among the cancers with links to these factors are those of the breast, prostate, mouth and colon.

Another third of cancers are due to smoking, indicating that well over half the cases of the disease could easily be prevented.

“It’s a very compelling case” that cancer incidence could be cut dramatically through prevention, said Shiriki Kumanyika, an epidemiologist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a member of an expert panel that oversaw the writing of the report. Also on the panel were such nutrition luminaries as the Harvard School of Public Health’s Walter Willett.

Dr. Kumanyika said scientific evidence strongly supports the estimate that poor diet, obesity and lack of exercise cause one out of three cancers. “I definitely feel confident that it’s at least that much,” she said.

Much of the medical research into the causes of cancer has looked at factors such as genetic susceptibility. But Dr. Kumanyika said studies tracking immigrants and their children who move from areas of low cancer incidence, such as Asia, to countries with high rates, such as the United States, suggest the genetic factor may be overrated. Over time, cancer rates among migrants and their children rise toward the levels prevalent in their adopted countries, suggesting that something common to everyone in the new environment is the cause.

Although individuals can make decisions to get more exercise or eat better food, thereby reducing their chances of developing cancer, the report says that entities ranging from governments to schools need to develop public-health strategies to reduce the incidence of the disease.

Among the steps it recommends are banning advertising of sugary drinks and unhealthy foods directed at children, a step Quebec has already taken. The report says the Quebec action has led to a decrease in the amount of sugary cereals purchased, particularly among francophones.

It also calls for vending machines that dispense high-fat, sugary sweets or drinks to be moved out of schools and workplace cafeterias.

Another approach that should be considered is having processed meals, snacks and food reformulated to contain less sugar, refined starches, fat and salt, the report says.

To encourage more physical activity, it says society should place less emphasis on elite professional sports that lead people to be sedentary spectators, and instead develop entertainment that inspires everyone to be physically active.

It says cities should be designed for walking and cycling, rather than the current practice of promoting automobile use through road expansion.

Canadians say fresh, healthy food too expensive: Poll

health-7
TORONTO — Almost half of Canadians say they are going without fresh, healthy food because it is too expensive, according to a national poll released Monday by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

The poll showed 47 per cent of Canadians don’t buy fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and whole grain products, lean meat or fish because of the cost.

The foundation’s annual report on Canadians’ Health also revealed what it called “startling discrepancies” in the cost and availability of basic healthy food from province to province.

“Depending on where you live, some Canadians are often paying more than double to almost six times the price for the same basic healthy food,” the report said.

The foundation said governments need to “create a level playing field” for consumers.

“Many provincial governments regulate the price of alcohol across provinces, but healthy food is subject to significant price variations from one community to the next,” said foundation spokesman Stephen Samis.

“You have to wonder why we control the price of alcohol but allow such price inconsistencies for healthy food — and not just in remote regions of the country — but even between larger metropolitan areas.”

For example, the poll found the cost of six apples ranged from $1.71 in Edmonton to $5.02 in Calgary. In Ontario, where apples are grown regionally, the cost varied from 90 cents in Peterborough to $5.49 in Dryden. A 2.7 kg bag of potatoes ranged from $1.50 in Toronto to $2.15 in Whitehorse, to $6.95 in Yellowknife, N.W.T.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation said the wide variation in the cost of healthy food is even more disturbing when compared to the relatively stable price of pop, chips and cookies.

“Healthy eating is a key factor in preventing heart disease,” cardiologist Dr. Beth Abramson, said Monday. “This report should serve as a wake-up call that healthy eating is in danger of being out of reach for many Canadians, a problem which may only get worse given the current downturn in the economy.”

Last October, the Heart and Stroke Foundation had volunteer shoppers in 66 communities across Canada purchase a list of healthy foods for a family of four for one week.

It found some of the most “disturbing” data was reflected in the price variations of grain products. For example, a package of whole-wheat pasta that cost $2 in Barrie, Ont., was $7.90 in Regina, Sask., and $11.37 in Dawson City, Yukon. A bag of brown rice ranged from $2.19 in Toronto to $7.76 in Winnipeg, to $11.99 in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.

In the case of both milk and cheese, the survey found prices could be more than double depending on where you live.

A pound of lean ground beef could range from $13.21 in Ottawa to $4.99 in Peterborough, Ont. and the Yukon.

The foundation said these price variations may explain why almost half of adults and 70 per cent children in Canada don’t consume the minimum recommended servings of vegetables and fruit established by Canada’s Food Guide.

“This can only encourage unhealthy eating behaviour that will ultimately lead to obesity and risk factors for heart disease,” Abramson said.

The situation was found to be even worse for First Nations people and Inuit, many of whom live in isolated communities.

In northern Ontario, four litres of milk was $15.70 in Bearskin Lake, compared to $3.49 in Vancouver. A package of whole-wheat pasta was $8.68, compared to $2.00 in Barrie, Ont. Other high cost items included: $10.99 for six oranges; $7.45 for six apples; and $10.88 for a 2.7 kg. bag of carrots. Survey shoppers also found that many healthy foods including chicken legs, frozen fish, fresh tomatoes, fresh broccoli, canned corn, canned peas, frozen mixed vegetables, potatoes and brown rice weren’t available at all in Bearskin Lake.

The study also found that healthy foods such as dried beans and frozen spinach were unavailable in almost one in three grocery stores where the foundation shopped.

The only items that showed little price variation and accessibility from one community to the next were pop, chips and cookies, which Canada’s Food Guide recommends be consumed less frequently.

Now on top of all that add to that how food manufacturers, drug stores do also make big  profits on health related items
